Program Completion / Graduation Requirements
The student will be recommended for the award of the degree of Master in Healthcare Management and Economics upon:
- Completion of 36 credits
- Obtaining a minimum CGPA of 3.0
- Obtaining a minimum pass mark of 80% (GradeB) for each course
- Submitting and defending a project work up to the satisfaction of the project evaluation committee with a minimum pass mark of 80%
- Securing a minimum attendance of 80%

- Applicants for the Master in Healthcare Management and Economics shall have a recognized Baccalaureate degree earned in a discipline appropriate for the prospective graduate degree with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (‘B’)or its established equivalent.
- A CGPA less than 3.0 may be admitted conditionally fulfilling conditions as stated under conditional admission requirements
- The Applicant must have proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Applicant who has completed his/her undergraduate education in English medium of Instruction shall submit the letter of evidence
- International applicant with medium of instruction in native language must clear the English language proficiency test such as TOEFL, IELTS Academic. A minimum score of 550 TOEFL (213 CBT, 79 iBT), 6.0 IELTS Academic.
- Applicants to have a minimum of three years of management or professional experience.
- Applicants with leadership potential.

Conditional Graduate Admission
- Graduate with less than the minimum score in English proficiency may be provided conditional admission that the student registers 6 credit hours in the first semester of his/her studies and obtains a “B” average or above.
- Applicant must achieve and EMSAT score of 1400 or IELTS 6.0 or equivalent by the end of first semester of study
- Applicant must achieve a minimum of CGPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or its established equivalent, in the first six credit hours of credit bearing courses studied for the Master’s program
- Graduate with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.5 to 2.9 on a 4.0 scale or its established equivalent shall be conditionally admitted to the first semester as follows:
- is allowed take a maximum of nine credit hours of courses studied for the graduate program during the period of conditional admission and
- must achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its established equivalent, in these nine credits of courses studied for the graduate program to progress to second semester or be subject to dismissal.
- Graduate with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.0 to 2.4 on a 4.0 scale or its established equivalent shall be admitted to the first semester as follows:
- is required to successfully complete a maximum of nine graduate-level credit hours as remedial preparation for the graduate program. These remedial courses are not for credit within the degree program
- must achieve a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or its established equivalent, in these nine credits of remedial courses in order to be admitted to the graduate program or be subject to dismissal.

Course Description
HME 600: Health System Science (Preparatory)
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to Health Systems Science, a critical field that bridges the gap between clinical care and the systems within which healthcare operates. Students will explore the structures, processes, and dynamics of health systems, gaining insights into how healthcare is delivered and how professionals collaborate to improve patient outcomes. This course aims to develop foundational skills in teamwork and leadership within health contexts, preparing students to contribute effectively to health systems transformation.
Semester 1
HME 601: Health Systems and Global Health
The course covers all global health issues that affect modern health systems, and the implications on health policy and the management of hospitals and other health providers. The effects of globalization on health behaviors, the impact of international governance of global health issues, the role of different international steering institutions (WHO, NGOs, etc.) are some of the topics discussed in-depth in the Programme, as well as the threats and opportunities on single health providers and from the executive perspective.
HME 602: Managing Healthcare Organizations
This course focuses the management of the unique healthcare organizations. It cover the topics of healthcare environment, high performing healthcare organization, functions of management, strategic management, foundation of clinical performance, clinical support service, managing community health, environment of care management, knowledge management and the financial and marketing function in healthcare organization.
HME 603: Accounting for Decision Making
The course explores the role of Managerial Accounting in decision-making. It focuses on managerial accounting concepts and tools that are relevant for making decision. The course emphasize the use of management accounting information in decision making. It employs relevant cases in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
HME 604: Health Economics
The course covers major issues in health economics that impact on management and policy making: market failures, asymmetry, adverse selection, difficulties in performance assessment, equity vs. universalism. Participants will become familiar with all specific dynamics funding, resource allocation, consumer behavior, supply induced demand etc. regulating or affecting the health sector.
HME 606: Operations Management in the Health Industry
This course provides executive with knowledge and techniques in healthcare operation management. The objective is to ensure that managers could make learned decision. Topics include forecasting, performance improvement tools, process improvement and patient flow, healthcare quality management, supply chain management, scheduling and capacity management and project management.
Semester 2
HME 607: Managing People at Work (Human Resource Management) & Leadership
The objective is to prepare managers to meet the present and emerging human resource challenges of modern health organizations. It covers the key human resource functions. The course also covers related topics of leadership. It provides executives with a balance of theory and practice of leadership.
HME 608: Financial Management in Healthcare Organizations
Healthcare is unique in the way it is financed. This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts and skills necessary to succeed as managers in an increasingly complex healthcare environment. Topics include an overview of financial management, the organization of financial management, third-party payment methodologies, Medicare, and Medicaid; cost accounting and analysis; managing and financing of working capital; materials management; accounts receivable management; strategic planning; budgeting; capital budget and financial analysis.
HME 609: Statistics & Research Methodology
This course will equip the students with advanced knowledge in the application of descriptive and inferential statistics, and also provide an overview of the different approaches, considerations, and challenges involved in health care research. This course will help students develop skills in analyzing and interpreting data from Health settings through classroom demonstrations and hands-on experience with XLSTAT / SPSS for data analysis. Provides an opportunity to understand the principles of quantitative research. The course covers international, national, and institutional guidelines regarding research in human and vulnerable populations. This course will give focus to communicating complex statistical information effectively.
HME 610: Health Technology Assessment
This course covers advanced economic evaluation of healthcare technology and programs to reduce costs and improve health-related quality of life. It also includes a complex analysis of health technology assessment methods used in different countries. Advanced strategies to perform a comprehensive evaluation to decide the merits and demerits of health technologies are also covered.
HME 614: Management Information Systems in the Health Industry
This course introduces key topics in healthcare information systems that could assist executives in making healthcare related decisions. The course describes types of healthcare information systems and tools that are necessary for decision making. It provides students with the opportunity to learn about functions of health information systems, evaluation and E-Health.
Semester 3
HME 605: Public Health
This course focuses on the key concepts in public health and the role of Epidemiologic studies to identify the determinants of disease to develop interventions to modify determinants. It emphasizes the importance of public health and encourages the student to pay attention to the core knowledge areas in the context of the totality. Also, this course aims to improve a critical approach and helps students develop substantive specialized skills in decision-making in healthcare. Student will upgrade their analytical thinking and innovative approach in managing complex economics and policy issues in compliance with healthcare sector professional standards.
HME 613: Strategic Management: Social Responsibility, Ethics & Governance
This course builds on students’ previous courses and work experience and seeks to deepen their understanding of effective management of the health organization in the long term. It focuses on the concept of strategy formulation and implementation. Through case studies, readings, lectures, discussions, and guest speakers, students become aware of the complexity of strategic decision-making and the increasingly competitive environment in healthcare. The course will provide students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills needed by managers to navigate and prioritize interrelated strategic issues, and in particular, social responsibility and ethical issues. The course also examines governance in healthcare organizations.
HME 611: Capstone Project
This course provides students with the opportunity to conduct an investigation of a topic of interest to them in healthcare settings. Students have the flexibility to choose a project related to their specific interests within the healthcare management field. Projects can cover a wide range of topics such as process improvement, policy analysis, technology implementation, or strategic planning etc. The research topic is selected from the list provided in the syllabus and with guidance from the supervising faculty member in charge. Once you start the capstone project, you will be developing your workplace/schedule with your mentor to complete the project on time. In this timeline, you will draft goals and objectives to complete in your capstone project. At the start of the semester, the faculty will meet virtually with the student and mentor to discuss the project and expectations. From there, the student and mentor should develop the project timeline. That timeline is submitted to the faculty for feedback/thoughts. You will be checking in with faculty at least bi-monthly. You can check in more frequently, but this project should progress according to the project timeline that you and your mentor determined to complete the project.
HME 612A: Marketing Management in Healthcare Organizations
In the 1980s, healthcare marketing was recognized as an area of activity for health service providers. As a result of this formal recognition, many new marketing concepts and techniques emerged. This course focuses on marketing management in healthcare organizations. Topics include overview of marketing and its application to healthcare; the unique aspects of healthcare; marketing concepts; the nature of healthcare markets; factor that influence demand for health services; healthcare consumers; healthcare services and products; the concepts of healthcare needs, wants and utilization; marketing strategies and marketing techniques in healthcare; marketing research process and marketing strategy.
HME 612B: AI in Healthcare
This course examines the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and healthcare, with a focus on the transformative role of AI in clinical practice. Students will study health IT systems, including data semantics, interoperability standards such as ICD-10, FHIR, and SNOMED CT, as well as clinical decision support tools. The course includes hands-on tutorials using real-world Electronic Health Record (EHR) data from MIMIC-III to develop skills in data search, natural language processing, machine learning, deep learning, and generative AI. Through applied projects, students will gain practical experience in AI applications for healthcare analytics, predictive modeling, and decision-making, preparing them for emerging roles in digital health innovation.
HME 612C: Digital Health
This course provides an in-depth understanding of digital health technologies and their role in transforming modern healthcare systems. Students will explore the evolution, infrastructure, and governance of digital health, including telemedicine, mobile health (mHealth), wearable devices, electronic health records (EHR), digital therapeutics, and health information systems. The course emphasizes real-world applications, standards, regulatory frameworks, privacy and security, and evaluation strategies for digital health interventions. Students will engage in case studies, tool demonstrations, and projects to build competence in leveraging digital tools for enhanced healthcare delivery.
HME 612D: Healthcare Administration
This course teaches you how to manage and coordinate healthcare services effectively. You’ll learn to apply core management principles to real-world healthcare settings like hospitals and clinics. The curriculum covers a range of essential topics, including healthcare policy, finance, human resources, and operational efficiency. You’ll also explore the legal and ethical principles that guide the industry, learn how to use data for informed decision-making, and address the importance of cultural diversity and teamwork in ensuring high-quality patient care.
