Gulf Medical University (GMU) has been featured by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), the United Kingdom’s independent quality body for higher education, as an official case study showcasing excellence in international institutional accreditation.
The case study, published on the QAA website, highlights GMU’s five-year quality journey from initial accreditation in 2021, through a successful mid-cycle review in 2024, to full reaccreditation in 2026. The 2026 reaccreditation confirmed that GMU meets all 10 of the European Standards and Guidelines (ESG), with seven commended features of good practice and no conditions — a clear trajectory of improvement and a mark of institutional excellence recognised globally.
Featuring insights from Professor Manda Venkatramana, Chancellor of GMU, the case study describes how the accreditation process transformed the University’s quality culture, shifting from compliance-driven quality control to a proactive, deeply embedded quality culture shared across the institution.
“Our QAA journey since 2021 has been transformative — not only in validating our quality, but also in strengthening and advancing it,” said Professor Venkatramana. “The significant increase in good practices recognised by QAA between 2021 and 2026, together with the absence of any conditions, reflects what five years of purposeful, accreditation-driven development can achieve — excellence!”
The case study also documents the tangible impact of GMU’s accreditation journey: student enrolment grew 44% from approximately 2,320 in 2021-22 to 3,345 in 2026-27, while the academic portfolio expanded from 27 to 40 accredited programmes. International partnerships deepened significantly during this period, including dual PhD programmes with the University of Paris-Saclay and Erasmus University Rotterdam, and the expansion of the Thumbay International Pathway Program across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
Key institutional developments highlighted by QAA include the establishment of the Deanship of Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness, the development of the QA&IE Portal, a fully integrated digital platform for real-time monitoring of academic performance and student outcomes — and strengthened student representation in quality governance.
QAA accreditation complements GMU’s national accreditations from the UAE’s Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) and provides students, employers, and partner universities worldwide with independent assurance that the University’s quality systems align with global standards.
