Gulf Medical University (GMU), through the Deanship of Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness, has taken a significant step in advancing its sustainability agenda by delivering a university-wide awareness session on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to all faculty and staff.
The session, presented by Prof. Ammar Almaaytah, Dean of Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness, emphasized the direct relevance of the SDGs and sustainability measures to GMU’s academic mission, research activities, and community engagement across all colleges.
Adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the SDGs provide a globally recognized framework for addressing interconnected global challenges, including health, education, inequality, climate change, and international partnerships. For a health-focused institution such as GMU, these goals are inherently embedded in the university’s core functions—educating healthcare professionals, advancing research, delivering community services, and fostering impactful partnerships.
In line with this commitment, the Deanship of Quality Assurance and Institutional Effectiveness has introduced a mandatory annual environmental and sustainability training requirement for all faculty and staff. This session represents the first implementation of this mandatory requirement, ensuring that all personnel understand the relevance of the SDGs to their roles, integrate sustainability considerations into teaching, research, and service activities, and contribute effectively to GMU’s reporting obligations under international ranking and accreditation frameworks.
