GMU Pharmacy and Medicine Students Collaborate in Interprofessional Prescribing Skills Activity

Interprofessional Prescribing Skills Activity

Final-year students from the Gulf Medical University (GMU) College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine participated in a joint Interprofessional Education (IPE) activity designed to strengthen prescribing competencies ahead of the Prescribing Skills Assessment (PSA) offered by the British Pharmacological Society.

Students from both colleges were assigned into ten mixed groups, each combining pharmacy and medical students. Working collaboratively, they discussed and solved clinical cases representing all major domains of the PSA exam. This interprofessional setup allowed students to benefit from each other’s strengths—pharmacy students contributing expertise in prescription review and medication safety, while medical students offered clinical decision‑making and prescribing insights.

Throughout the activity, participants accessed the British National Formulary (BNF) via the GMU e‑Library to support evidence‑based decision‑making as they worked through the cases.

The event coordinator reviewed the group responses, provided detailed feedback on areas for improvement, and shared all case materials with participants for continued preparation. All students received certificates recognizing their participation in this valuable learning experience.

The Deans of the College of Pharmacy and the College of Medicine expressed their appreciation to the students and their clinical supervisors for their active engagement and commitment to interprofessional learning. They emphasized the importance of such collaborative activities in preparing future healthcare professionals for safe and effective clinical practice.
