On Thursday, March 26, 2026, the College of Pharmacy at Gulf Medical University hosted an Online Faculty Research Seminar delivered by Dr. Mohamed Salem, Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy and Research Scientist in the Bioactives Lab at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. The session was attended by faculty members and graduate students from the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department and related programs.
Titled “The Era of ‘Omics’ in Pharmaceutical Research: MS-Based Metabolomics Applications in Pharmacy,” the seminar highlighted advanced analytical approaches in modern pharmaceutical research, with a particular focus on metabolomics and lipidomics. Dr. Salem discussed the growing significance of mass spectrometry (MS)-based techniques in profiling metabolites, understanding biological systems, and supporting drug discovery and development. He also emphasized the integration of systems biology, analytical chemistry, and natural product research in identifying bioactive compounds, improving the quality control of herbal medicines, and advancing translational applications relevant to pharmaceutical sciences.
The seminar concluded with an engaging and interactive discussion session, where faculty members and students actively exchanged ideas with Dr. Salem. Participants raised insightful questions on metabolomics applications, research methodologies, and future directions in pharmaceutical sciences, fostering a dynamic academic dialogue. The session was well received and provided a valuable opportunity for knowledge sharing and collaborative engagement.
