PharmD Student Participates in Interprofessional Case Discussion on Pericoronal abscess

As a part of the ongoing monthly interprofessional activity, the College of Pharmacy’s final year Pharm D candidate Ms. Maram Al Salloum participated in the Second Interprofessional case discussion conducted at Thumbay Hospital, Ajman on 5th December 2017.

A case of the Pericoronal abscess was presented by a group of three students from three disciplines, the College of Pharmacy, College of Dentistry and College of Medicine.

During her presentation, Ms. Maram introduced the microbiological flora of the oral cavity and presented on the clinical pharmacist’s perspective of the case in relation to the pharmacotherapy, and evidence-based guidelines. She also elaborated on the choice of analgesics, antibiotics and mouthwashes in a patient with Pericoronal abscess. In addition, she presented the latest guidelines and literature supporting her critical assessment of the case along with the therapeutic options.

During her presentation, Ms. Maram also highlighted the US FDA alert on Chlorhexidine mouthwash and provided the information on available alternative options.

During all the phases of the case learning the students worked together and appreciated each other’s importance and unique responsibilities in the healthcare team.
