GMU Pharmacy Students Present on Pharmacovigilance and Medication Safety

Gulf Medical University’s Pharmacy students marked another milestone in advancing clinical education as two final-year students presented to the Clinical Pharmacy team on reporting adverse drug events and medication errors in hospital practice.

The presentation was the culmination of an intensive training initiative led by the Clinical Pharmacy team earlier this year, which introduced Pharmacy students to the principles and processes of pharmacovigilance. Over several months, the students applied their knowledge in real-world settings, gaining practical experience in identifying, documenting, and reporting medication-related incidents.

Pharmacovigilance and Medication Safety

During the session, the students shared their insights, reflected on challenges encountered, and outlined future action plans to strengthen their contribution to pharmacovigilance efforts. Their work emphasized the critical role of pharmacists in ensuring patient safety and highlighted the importance of structured reporting systems in hospital settings.

Pharmacovigilance is a cornerstone of safe and effective healthcare. Seeing our Pharmacy students take ownership of this responsibility and present meaningful strategies for improvement demonstrates the impact of experiential learning and interprofessional collaboration.

This initiative underscores GMU’s commitment to preparing future pharmacists with the competencies required to lead in medication safety and public health. By integrating training with applied practice, GMU continues to foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and excellence in healthcare education.
