The College of Pharmacy, Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman, UAE, proudly congratulates Dr. Mohammed Salim Karattuthodi, Assistant Professor, for being part of an expert research team that has successfully achieved two Design Registrations granted by the Patent Office, Government of India. The team comprised Mr. Ashutosh, Dr. Rajesh R., and Dr. Girish Thunga from Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, India, Dr. Shivaprakash from Kasturba Medical College, India, along with other contributing experts. The work was undertaken as part of Mr. Ashutosh’s PhD research, for which Dr. Salim serves as Co-Supervisor.

The two registered designs are:
- Medical Device Scanner – Design Registration No. 497558-001, registered on 7 April 2026. The invention relates to a dedicated medical device identification capture system designed to support medical informatics and materiovigilance reporting. It utilizes a handheld or dockable scanner to read QR codes, barcodes, or Unique Device Identifiers (UDI) on medical devices and automatically extracts key identification details, including manufacturer, model, batch number, serial number, software version, manufacturing year, and UDI. The captured information is transmitted to an adverse event reporting platform, where the relevant fields are automatically populated, eliminating manual data entry. This innovation improves reporting accuracy, reduces documentation time and transcription errors, enhances device traceability, facilitates rapid identification of defective or recalled devices, and strengthens regulatory compliance and patient safety through efficient medical device surveillance.
- Smart Coronary Stent – Design Registration No. 510684-001, registered on 24 July 2026. The patent pertains to the design of a coronary stent, specifically its external appearance and visual configuration. The smart, self-reporting coronary stent is intended for permanent intravascular implantation during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
Both designs were registered in the name of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), India, under the Designs Act, 2000 and Designs Rules, 2001. This achievement reflects the importance of academic mentorship, PhD co-supervision, interdisciplinary research, and faculty collaboration in translating innovative ideas into protected intellectual property.
Congratulations to the entire research team on this remarkable achievement
