On Thursday, September 17, 2026, the College of Pharmacy at Gulf Medical University hosted an Online Research Seminar Series featuring Dr. Laila Ziko, an Associate Professor at the School of Life and Medical Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, hosted by Global Academic Foundation, Egypt.
Titled “Mining for Biosynthetic Gene Clusters from Understudied Microbes for Antibacterial & Anticancer Activity,” the seminar explored approaches for identifying biosynthetic gene clusters from understudied microbial sources with potential antibacterial and anticancer activities. Dr. Ziko’s research focused on the discovery of novel compounds with antibacterial and anticancer potential from microbial sources.
The seminar concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which faculty members and students actively engaged with Dr. Ziko, exchanged insights, and discussed various aspects of microbial genome mining and the discovery of novel antibacterial and anticancer compounds.
