On Thursday, January 22, 2025, the College of Pharmacy at Gulf Medical University hosted an online faculty research seminar delivered by Dr. Farid G. Khalafalla, PhD, Associate Dean and Chief Academic Integrity Officer at Touro University California, College of Health Sciences. The session was attended by faculty members and graduate students from the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department and related programs.
Titled “Purinergic Signaling in Heart Repair: Mechanistic Insights and Therapeutic Frontiers,” the seminar explored the molecular mechanisms of purinergic signaling in cardiac repair and regeneration, highlighting their therapeutic potential in cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Khalafalla shared insights from his research on extracellular nucleotide signaling and its role in tissue remodeling.
Drawing from his academic journey—from earning his PhD at the University of Missouri–Columbia to completing NIH-supported postdoctoral training at San Diego State University—Dr. Khalafalla highlighted key discoveries in cardiac regeneration and reflected on his experience in biomedical research and academic leadership.
The seminar concluded with an interactive discussion, during which faculty and students engaged Dr. Khalafalla on translational research and future directions in cardiovascular therapeutics. The session offered valuable perspectives on linking molecular science with clinical innovation.
