On Thursday, February 5, 2026, the College of Pharmacy at Gulf Medical University hosted a Faculty Research Seminar delivered by Dr. Amira Khalil, PhD, RPh, Associate Professor of Medicinal Chemistry. The session was held in Lecture Hall 9 and was attended by faculty members and students from the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department and related programs.
Titled “From Bench to Bedside via the Patent Office: Turning Innovation into Disease Diagnosis,” the seminar highlighted the translational journey of scientific discoveries from laboratory research to clinical application, with particular emphasis on intellectual property and patent development as key drivers of innovation in disease diagnosis. Dr. Khalil discussed the integration of medicinal chemistry, bioanalytical methods, and drug design in advancing diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.

Drawing from her extensive academic and research experience across Canada and Egypt, Dr. Khalil shared insights from her PhD training at the University of Alberta, where she specialized in carbohydrate chemistry and protein–carbohydrate interactions. She also reflected on her leadership as a principal investigator, her contributions to patented technologies for detecting and treating aspergillosis, and her work in cancer-related drug discovery supported by competitive research grants.
The seminar concluded with an engaging discussion session, during which faculty and students explored topics related to innovation pathways, research commercialization, and the evolving role of medicinal chemists in translational science. The event provided valuable perspectives on bridging academic research with clinical practice and industry advancement.
