Faculty Development Program on Responsible Authorship and Ethical Publishing

The College of Nursing organized a faculty development program titled “Responsible Authorship and Ethical Publishing: Safeguarding Integrity in Nursing Research on October 1, 2025. The session was led by Dr. Veena M. Joseph, Assistant Professor in Nursing, CoN, GMU who shared her knowledge and experience in research ethics and scholarly publishing.

Dr. Veena began the session by discussing the meaning of responsible authorship and the importance of giving proper credit to each contributor in a research project. She explained the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) criteria for authorship, helping faculty understand how to fairly determine authorship order and contribution.

The discussion also explored key ethical issues in publishing, including redundant and duplicate publications, self-plagiarism, and the growing concern about predatory or suspicious journals. Dr. Veena guided the participants on how to identify credible journals, assess their indexing and peer-review standards, and make informed decisions to ensure their research is published ethically and responsibly.
