As part of its commitment to community engagement, health promotion, and preventive healthcare, the Master of Science in Adult Critical Care Nursing (MSACCN) Semester 2 students from the College of Nursing, Gulf Medical University, organized a community awareness program on 08 July 2026 at the Outpatient Department (OPD), Dubai Hospital, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The program was conducted in observance of World Sickle Cell Day with the aim of increasing public awareness regarding sickle cell disease, promoting early detection, encouraging genetic counselling, and empowering individuals and families with knowledge related to disease prevention and management.
The program focused on creating awareness about sickle cell disease and its genetic inheritance, educating the public about its signs, symptoms, complications, and available management strategies, and promoting healthy lifestyle practices to reduce disease-related complications. The initiative also emphasized the importance of early screening, regular medical follow-up, and informed decision-making among individuals and families. In addition, the program provided an opportunity for MSACCN students to strengthen their communication, health education, teamwork, and leadership skills through meaningful community engagement.
A variety of interactive educational activities were conducted to maximize participant involvement and learning. These included the distribution of educational brochures and awareness leaflets on sickle cell disease, one-to-one health education sessions conducted by MSACCN students, and the display of informative posters highlighting the causes, genetic basis, symptoms, complications, and treatment options related to sickle cell disease. Interactive question-and-answer sessions were also conducted to address participants’ concerns, clarify misconceptions, and reinforce the importance of preventive measures and regular healthcare follow-up.
The awareness campaign received active participation from patients, family members, visitors, and healthcare staff attending the OPD during the program hours. Participants engaged positively with the students, expressed their interest in learning more about sickle cell disease, and appreciated the practical and easy-to-understand educational materials provided.
The initiative successfully promoted awareness and understanding of sickle cell disease through interactive educational activities and direct community engagement. The program reflects the College of Nursing, Gulf Medical University’s commitment to community service, preventive healthcare, and the preparation of advanced nursing professionals capable of contributing to health promotion beyond the clinical setting.
