GMU Medical Students Lead Health Screening and Awareness Initiative for National Service Recruits

Medical Students at National Service Recruits

The students from the College of Medicine at Gulf Medical University (GMU), through its Community Engagement Committee, actively participated in a community outreach initiative titled “Health Screening and Awareness for National Service Recruits” on 8 June 2026 at Majlis Ameen Al Shurafa, Mushairif, Ajman.

The initiative was organized in collaboration with MOHAP Ajman, Thumbay University Hospital, and the Thumbay Institute of Population Health (TIPH) to promote preventive healthcare, early identification of health risks, and health awareness among National Service recruits.

This outreach activity provided students with a valuable opportunity to apply their clinical and public health knowledge in a real-world setting while contributing to national health promotion efforts. Under faculty supervision, participants conducted Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments, blood pressure screenings, and delivered health education, nutritional guidance, and lifestyle counseling to more than 300 National Service recruits.

A total of 35 volunteers, representing diverse academic backgrounds, participated in the initiative. The volunteer team included medical interns, MBBS graduates, MD/MBBS students, Master of Public Health (MPH) students, and students from the Health Management and Economics (HME) program, demonstrating GMU’s interdisciplinary approach to community engagement and healthcare service.

Health Screening and Awareness Initiative

The activity was supervised by Professor Shatha Al-Sharbatti and Dr. Hiba Ali Elzaki Hajomer, who guided the participants in conducting health screening procedures and providing evidence-based health and nutrition counseling. Their mentorship ensured high standards of professionalism while enriching students’ experiential learning and community service competencies.

This collaborative initiative reflects the College of Medicine’s commitment to social accountability, community engagement, and experiential learning. It also highlights the importance of partnerships between academia, healthcare institutions, and governmental organizations in addressing population health needs. Through such initiatives, GMU continues to nurture future healthcare professionals equipped with the knowledge, skills, and sense of responsibility required to advance preventive healthcare and community well-being.

The College of Medicine extends its sincere appreciation to MOHAP Ajman, Thumbay University Hospital, and the Thumbay Institute of Population Health for their collaboration and support in facilitating this impactful community engagement activity.

The activity aligns with the UAE’s vision for preventive healthcare, community well-being, and the development of socially accountable healthcare professionals.
