The Community Engagement Committee of the College of Medicine, Gulf Medical University, successfully organized a five-part lecture series on Evidence-Based Practice and Systematic Review Methodology during April 2026. The series was delivered by Dr. Gary Low, Biostatistician at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research and Nepean Hospital, New South Wales, Australia, and attracted participants interested in advancing their knowledge of evidence-based healthcare and research methodologies.
Designed to enhance research literacy and evidence-informed decision-making, the lecture series provided a comprehensive overview of the principles and applications of evidence-based practice, systematic reviews, and meta-analysis. Participants gained valuable insights into the hierarchy of scientific evidence, research study designs, systematic review planning and execution, critical appraisal of literature, evidence synthesis, reporting standards, and the translation of research findings into clinical practice and public health policy.
The series also introduced participants to the practical application of meta-analysis in the R statistical environment, enabling them to understand key analytical concepts and explore contemporary tools for evidence synthesis. Through interactive discussions and real-world examples, attendees developed a deeper appreciation of how high-quality evidence contributes to clinical guidelines, healthcare procedures, and policy development.
The lecture series reflects the College of Medicine’s ongoing commitment to promoting research excellence, lifelong learning, and evidence-based healthcare practices among faculty members, students, healthcare professionals, and the wider academic community. It also provided an important platform for international academic collaboration and knowledge exchange.
