Impact of Neuroglia on Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Prof. Sovan Bagchi, Professor of Physiology and Program Director, BBMS was invited to deliver a plenary lecture titled: Impact of Neuroglia on Neurodevelopmental Disorders at PHYSICON- 2025, held on 22 November 2025 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, India.

The lecture focused on the emerging and critical role of microglia—the resident immune cells of the central nervous system—in sculpting neural circuits during development, and how their dysregulation contributes to neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and schizophrenia. The content of the lecture was based on current scientific evidence, including my submitted abstract titled “Impact of Microglia in Neurodevelopmental Disorders”. The presentation highlighted mechanisms of synaptic pruning, neuroinflammation, neuronal survival, environmental interactions, and therapeutic implications.

The session was well received by faculty, clinicians, postgraduate scholars, and researchers from several medical institutions across India. It also facilitated discussions on potential collaborative research opportunities in neuroimmunology and developmental neuroscience. His participation contributed to enhancing the academic visibility and international representation of Gulf Medical University at a national scientific forum hosted by one of India’s premier medical institutions.
