Gulf Medical University conducted a Cardiovascular Risk Screening Campaign on June 25, 2024, in collaboration with Emirates Red Crescent led by the faculty and students from the College of Medicine and College of Health Sciences. The objectives of the event were to screen workers of the Emirates Red Crescent and the general public for cardiovascular risk and provide education tailored to individual risk of cardiovascular disease.
The campaign included screening for hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and other risk factors. The participants received education tailored to their individual risk of cardiovascular disease. Educational brochures were distributed. Participants found to have high blood pressure and didn’t have a blood pressure apparatus at home were provided with a gift digital blood pressure device from the Emirates Red Crescent.
Over 30 participants benefitted from the screening campaign with a satisfaction rate of 90%. It was an excellent opportunity for the medical and health sciences students to volunteer for an outreach activity at the Emirates Red Crescent, Ajman.
“This opportunity to volunteer was an incredible experience. It improved my communication and teamwork skills and I was able to interact with many people which boosted my self-confidence. I would be happy to participate in similar events in the future”, said Afreen Abdul Rahim Sanaullah, a second MD student.
“I was given the role to enter data and register the participants details. It was fun and an interesting experience. It was a very good learning opportunity for me, and I am really glad I was part of it,” said Sathyapriya Nandagopal, also a second year MD student.
“Engaging with the community at the Emirates Red Crescent Ajman Center was immensely rewarding. I found it particularly fulfilling to share insights on good health practices and the significance of regular checkups with the participants. The hospitality of the Emirates Red Crescent Team was exceptional and their perfect organization ensured a smooth and impactful interaction for everyone involved,” Prof. Shatha Alsharbathi, Head, Department of Community Medicine, College of Medicine summed-up the sentiments expressed by her team.
“I would like to thank the Community Medicine Department at Gulf Medical University for their constant commitment to the overall well-being of society and for collaborating with us in organizing such meaningful community engagement activities,” said an official from the Red Crescent Ajman Center.
