The Community Engagement Committee of the College of Medicine at Gulf Medical University successfully organized a five-part Community Lecture Series in May 2026 to raise awareness about cancer. The series brought together faculty, students, and community members to enhance understanding of common cancers and promote preventive health practices.
The lecture series was delivered by distinguished experts in the field. Dr. Mona Quenawy, Associate Professor of Clinical Oncology at Ain Shams University, conducted sessions on colorectal and gynecologic cancers, while Dr. Safaa Abdelkahlek, Associate Professor of Pathology at Gulf Medical University, delivered lectures on gastric, breast, and lung cancers. The sessions were designed to provide comprehensive, accessible knowledge about major cancer types affecting the community.
Each lecture addressed key aspects including epidemiology, causes, risk factors, signs and symptoms, and available screening methods. The speakers also shared concise take-home messages to encourage early detection, lifestyle modification, and timely medical consultation.
A unique feature of the series was the utilization of the GMU Simulation Center, where participants were guided through practical demonstrations, including breast cancer self-examination techniques. This hands-on component enhanced participant engagement and reinforced the importance of early detection practices.
These sessions are particularly contributing to SDG 3 (Good health and well-being) by prioritizing preventive care, mental health support, and community well-being. They equip participants with practical tools to manage stress, improve physical health, and build resilience
