STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAMS

Mentorship

The Mentorship program of GMU is an opportunity to provide personal, academic, and/or career-related guidance to students seeking such assistance. The college assigns a mentor to each student after identifying the mentor they would most like to work with. Mentors are provided some guidelines and suggestions based on the grow model on how to make their interaction with the student more and more effective and add value to the entire process aiming to achieve the goals set for each mentee. The effectiveness of such a program is measured through evaluations completed by both mentor and mentee.

Topics addressed during mentor meetings are many, and may include:

  • Setting academic and career goals (What do you want to achieve and when?)
  • Assessing past achievements and performance. (What have you done so far to achieve this goal?)
  • Identifying bottlenecks. (What are the major constraints in moving forward?)
  • Preparing action plan with accountabilities and deadlines (How will you overcome these constraints?)
  • Implementing the action plan and monitoring against the set goals.

TCMAIH Programs Requirement Guidelines for Students of Determination:

Healthcare managers, like professionals in many other fields, may not have specific physical requirements associated with their roles. The responsibilities of healthcare managers are typically more related to administrative, managerial, and leadership tasks rather than physical demands. However, certain physical and mental attributes can contribute to success in this role:

Mobility:
While healthcare managers may not have strenuous physical demands, being mobile and able to move around the healthcare facility can be beneficial. This might involve walking through different departments, attending meetings, and interacting with staff.

Stamina:
The role of a healthcare manager can be demanding, requiring long hours and the ability to handle a variety of tasks. Good stamina is essential to manage the responsibilities effectively and maintain focus throughout the workday.

Communication Skills:
Clear and effective communication is crucial for healthcare managers. While this is more of a cognitive skill, it does involve verbal and non-verbal aspects that contribute to successful interaction with staff, colleagues, and other stakeholders.

Organizational Skills:
The ability to stay organized is vital for healthcare managers. This includes managing schedules, overseeing projects, and ensuring that administrative tasks are completed efficiently.

Stress Management:
Healthcare management can be stressful due to the responsibility for overseeing operations, dealing with regulatory compliance, and addressing various challenges. Having effective stress management skills is important for maintaining overall well-being.

Problem-Solving Skills:
Healthcare managers need to be able to think critically and solve problems effectively. This involves mental agility and the ability to make decisions in a timely manner.

Technology Proficiency:
Healthcare management often involves using various technologies for data analysis, project management, and communication. Being comfortable with technology and having good keyboard and computer skills can be beneficial.

Interpersonal Skills:
Healthcare managers interact with a variety of people, including staff, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Having good interpersonal skills, such as empathy and the ability to build positive relationships, is crucial.

Leadership Qualities:
Leadership in healthcare management requires qualities such as confidence, decisiveness, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. While these are more psychological attributes, they contribute to effective leadership.

Adaptability:
Healthcare environments can be dynamic and subject to change. Being adaptable and open to new ideas and approaches is an asset for healthcare managers.

It’s important to note that healthcare management roles can vary widely depending on the specific position, the type of healthcare facility, and the scope of responsibilities. While physical requirements may not be prominent, possessing a combination of cognitive, interpersonal, and organizational skills is essential for success in healthcare management.
