Dental Implantology Program

The Clinical Certificate in Dental Implantology is a one-year program accredited by the National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS) in the UAE. It is designed to provide general dentists with comprehensive theoretical knowledge, clinical training, and hands-on experience in implant dentistry. As the field of implantology continues to evolve, the demand for skilled general clinicians proficient in both surgical and prosthetic aspects of implant treatment has significantly increased.

This program is structured to bridge the gap between basic dental training and advanced implant practice, equipping general dentists with the necessary competencies to deliver predictable, safe, and evidence-based implant treatments.

To be eligible for enrollment in the Clinical Certificate in Dental Implantology program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Educational Qualifications and Clinical Experience
    • Must hold a B.D.S. (Bachelor of Dental Surgery), D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery), or D.M.D. (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree.
    • The degree must be obtained from a university recognized and accredited by the Ministry of Education of the UAE​.
    • Proficiency in English is required as all coursework, lectures, and assessments are conducted in English.
    • A minimum of three years of clinical experience after completing the internship is required​.
  2. Supporting Documents
    • Two reference letters from dental professionals or academic mentors, issued within the last 12 months at the time of application.
    • A valid trainee evaluation letter from MOH.
    • Must meet NIHS and UAE health and immunization requirements, including vaccinations for Hepatitis B, Tetanus, and other required immunizations.
    • Applicants must maintain valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification​.
    • A curriculum vitae (CV) detailing academic and professional experience.
  3. Interview Process
    • Shortlisted candidates may be required to attend an interview (in-person or virtual) to assess their commitment, knowledge, and suitability for the program.

The Clinical Certificate in Dental Implantology is a one-year NIHS-accredited program in the UAE designed to equip general dentists with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in implant dentistry. The curriculum includes didactic learning, simulation training, and clinical exposure, ensuring competency in both the surgical and prosthetic aspects of implant treatment.

  • One-year full-time program accredited by NIHS (National Institute for Health Specialties).
  • Minimum 1280 contact hours, including:
    • 256 hours of didactic (theoretical) learning
    • 1024 hours of hands-on clinical and practical training​.
  1. Theoretical Modules (260 Hours)
    Participants will gain in-depth knowledge through structured coursework covering essential concepts in implant dentistry.

    • Module 1: Bone Biology.
    • Module 2: Anatomical Basis for Dental Implantology .
    • Module 3: Research & Critical Review of Scientific Articles.
    • Module 4: Principles of Dental Photography.
    • Module 5: Diagnosis & Treatment Planning in Implant Dentistry.
    • Module 6: Principles of Implant Surgery.
    • Module 7: Guided Implant Surgery.
    • Module 8: Adjunctive Procedures in Implant Surgery.
    • Module 9: Periodontal Considerations in Implant Dentistry.
    • Module 10: Implant Prosthodontics.
    • Module 11: Full Mouth Rehabilitation & Occlusion Analysis.
    • Module 12: Management of Severely Atrophied Jaw.
    • Module 13: Implant Maintenance & Management of Complications.
  2. Practical Modules (Hands-on Simulation Training)
    Before performing clinical procedures on patients, trainees will:

    • Practice implant placement on simulation models.
    • Develop skills in digital treatment planning and implant positioning.
    • Learn and refine suturing, incision, and flap management techniques.
  3. Clinical Training (1024 Hours in a Clinical Setting)
    Trainees will be exposed to real patient cases, under expert supervision, covering:

    • Patient selection & case assessment – Medical history, radiographic evaluation, and treatment planning.
    • Surgical implant placement – Each trainee must complete a minimum of 30 surgical cases.
    • Prosthetic restorations – Fabrication and placement of implant-supported prostheses.
    • Management of complications – Handling implant failures and peri-implant diseases.

To successfully complete the Clinical Certificate in Dental Implantology program and receive  Thumbay University Hospital Complex accredited certification, trainees must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Pass End module Quizzes & written exams by at least 60%.
  • Completion of a minimum of 30 implant placements across 10 different patients.
  • Pass Logbook Evaluation by at least 70%.
  • Minimum 80% attendance in all didactic lectures, simulation training, and clinical sessions.

The successful graduates of the Clinical Certificate in Dental Implantology, accredited by NIHS (National Institute for Health Specialties) in the UAE, will be eligible to apply and stand for the required examinations to obtain dental implant privileges across all UAE emirates, allowing them to legally perform implant procedures within their scope of practice. In addition, the program equips general dentists with specialized skills to successfully integrate implant dentistry into their clinical practice. Graduates of this program will have various career pathways in private practice, hospitals, academic institutions, and research.
