Advancing Clinical Skills with Hands-on Workshop on Dry Needling at Department of Physiotherapy – CoHS

Department of Physiotherapy, College of Health Sciences (CoHS), Gulf Medical University (GMU), conducted a one-day workshop titled “Dry Needling in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy” on 07th February 2026. The program was organized in association with Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital and was accredited with 4.5 EHS Credits CME.

The workshop brought together 20 practicing physiotherapists from Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital, creating a focused platform for academic discussion and practical skill enhancement.

The program commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Ramprasad, Associate Dean and Chair of the Department of Physiotherapy, who outlined the objectives of the workshop and highlighted the importance of evidence-based dry needling in contemporary musculoskeletal practice.

The first academic session was delivered by Dr. Rajasekar Sannasi, Assistant Professor, on Myofascial Pain Syndrome, who discussed the pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical features, and assessment of myofascial trigger points, establishing a strong theoretical foundation.

This was followed by a session on Introduction to Dry Needling by Dr. Sukumar Shanmugam, Associate Professor who covered the principles, mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, and safety considerations of dry needling in musculoskeletal physiotherapy, with emphasis on clinical reasoning and safe application.

The workshop then transitioned into a Hands-On Practical Session. Upper quadrant dry needling techniques were demonstrated and supervised by Dr. Rajasekar, while lower quadrant techniques were facilitated by Dr. Sukumar. The practical component emphasized safe needling techniques, anatomical landmarks, and clinical reasoning.

The final session, led by Dr. Ramprasad, addressed Post-Needling Advice And Exercise Prescription, highlighting post-treatment care, management of soreness, and appropriate exercise progression for various clinical conditions.

The entire program was highly interactive, incorporating case discussions, participant engagement, and live demonstrations throughout the day.

The workshop concluded with certificate distribution by Ms. Jenny Elizabeth Anil, Clinical Education Manager, and was marked by the visit of Mr. Omar Walid Adas from Sheikh Khalifa General Hospital, signifying the successful completion of the academic and practical sessions.
