Department of Anesthesia Technology, College of Health Sciences (CoHS), Gulf Medical University, marked another academic milestone through active participation in an international educational webinar titled “Anesthesia Machine & Ventilators and Its Modes”, organized by the Department of Anesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology, Shantha College of Allied Health Sciences, Shantha Group of Institutions, Karnataka, India.

The guest speaker for the event was Ms. Ashli Shaji, Preceptor from the Department of Anesthesia Technology, CoHS, GMU, UAE. The webinar was held on 5 December 2025 in the Seminar Hall of the SGI campus and witnessed the enthusiastic participation of approximately 250 allied health science students and faculty members. The session focused on strengthening foundational and clinical understanding of anesthesia workstations and ventilation strategies used in modern anesthesia practice.
The academic program was conducted under the guidance of Chief Patron Dr. Preethi Sudhakar, Managing Trustee, SGI, and Patron Dr. Naveen H Simon, CEO and Dean Academics, SGI. The event was convened by Mr. Anush and coordinated by Mr. Sai Krishna RD and Ms. Kadiyala Sai Harini, Lecturers, Department of ATOT, whose efforts ensured an engaging learning experience.
The 45-minute session covered key components and safety systems of anesthesia machines, including gas supply mechanisms, vaporizers, breathing circuits, CO₂ absorption systems, scavenging systems, and built in patient safety features. A detailed discussion on commonly used ventilation modes such as Volume-Controlled Ventilation (VCV), Pressure-Controlled Ventilation (PCV), Pressure Support Ventilation (PSV), and Synchronized Intermittent Mandatory Ventilation (SIMV), was complemented with clinical decision making based on patient physiology and surgical requirements.

The discussion centered on how these modes are selected according to the patient’s lung condition, body habitus, and the demands of the surgery, while always keeping patient safety at the forefront through careful attention to monitoring parameters such as tidal volume, PEEP levels, peak and plateau airway pressures, FiO₂, the shape and value of the ETCO₂ waveform, and prompt response to alarms.
To bring the concepts closer to real-world application, three short clinical scenarios were shared:
- managing ventilation during a laparoscopic procedure with pneumoperitoneum,
- supporting an obese patient under general anesthesia,
- and maintaining spontaneous breathing during a short case using a laryngeal mask airway.

The session concluded with an interactive question and answer segment, reflecting strong student engagement and clinical curiosity.
The program stood as a meaningful example of academic collaboration and knowledge sharing across institutions, contributing positively to the professional development of allied health science students.
