GMU Optometry Faculty Strengthens Global Vision Health through Kenya Webinar

Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences under the College of Health Sciences (CoHS), Gulf Medical University (GMU), continues to make remarkable strides in global optometric education and community outreach.

Dr. Jameel Rizwana Hussaindeen, Program Director and Associate Professor, Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences, CoHS, delivered an engaging webinar on 24 September 2025 for the Kenya Association of Opticians titled “Screening for Binocular Vision Anomalies in Children: A Simple and Practical Approach.”

The interactive session brought together practicing opticians, optometrists, optical business owners, regulatory authorities, and healthcare partners from across Kenya. Dr. Rizwana emphasized the importance of early detection of binocular vision anomalies in children and demonstrated how simple, low-cost, and structured screening protocols can be seamlessly integrated into primary eye care.

Dr. Rizwana highlighted that early identification of convergence, accommodative, and oculomotor dysfunctions can significantly reduce academic strain and enhance children’s quality of life. Dr. Rizwana further advocated for routine binocular vision screening and timely referrals as key strategies to strengthen primary eye care and community vision health.
