Dr. Jovita D’Souza, Lecturer & Specialist in Periodontics, College of Dentistry, Gulf Medical University delivered an informative session in an international webinar organized by the Curaden Academy titled “Stress, Inflammation and the Nervous System: Expanding Our Approach to Periodontal Care,” on the 17th of March 2026.
The session highlighted the impact of psychological stress on periodontal health through neuroimmunological pathways. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and altered cortisol levels were discussed as key factors influencing immune response and periodontal inflammation.
Dr. Jovita also emphasized that stress-related changes can exacerbate periodontal tissue destruction, underscoring the importance of integrating systemic and psychosocial factors into patient care.
The webinar reinforced the need for a holistic, patient-centered approach beyond the traditional biofilm-centric model, aligning with emerging evidence in periodontal therapy.
