Mohammed Sheik Rashid, Postgraduate of the MDS Endodontics Program, Successfully Defends Thesis on Comparative Evaluation of Rotary Systems for Root Canal Retreatment

The College of Dentistry, Gulf Medical University (GMU), successfully conducted the thesis defense of Mohammed Sheik Rashid, a postgraduate student of the MDS Endodontics Program, on the 12th of September 2025. His thesis, titled “Comparative Evaluation of ProTaper Ultimate and ProTaper Gold for Retreatment of Root Canals Filled with AH Plus and TotalFill Bioceramic Sealers: An Ex vivo Study” focused on one of the most significant challenges in endodontics.

The defense highlighted how different rotary systems, ProTaper Ultimate and ProTaper Gold, perform in retreating canals filled with epoxy resin–based sealer (AH Plus) and bioceramic sealer (TotalFill), analyzing efficiency, residual debris, and preservation of canal anatomy. The discussions also emphasized the clinical implications of choosing the most effective retreatment strategy, as well as prospects for integrating advanced imaging and bioceramic technologies into endodontic practice.

The thesis was supervised by Prof. Bassem Mohamed Eid, Professor of Endodontics and Director of the MDS Endodontics Program, and Dr. Ranya Elemam, Assistant Professor of Endodontics, CoD. The examination panel included Prof. Mehmet Omer Gorduysus from the University of Sharjah and Dr. Nelly Abdelsalam, Associate Professor of Endodontics, CoD, GMU. The successful defense reflected the candidate’s strong understanding of advanced endodontic concepts.
