The College of Dentistry, Gulf Medical University, organized an engaging and insightful Faculty Development Session titled “Evaluation of Communication Skills in Health Professional Education” on the 27th of November 2025. The session was delivered by Dr. Ahmed Adel Ali Salama, Associate Professor of Pediatric Dentistry, CoD who emphasized on the vital role that communication plays in shaping competent, empathetic, and patient-centered health professionals.
Dr. Ahmed highlighted the central role of communication in improving patient care, developing trust, and enhancing interprofessional collaboration. He discussed internationally recognized frameworks such as Calgary-Cambridge, SBAR, and CanMEDS, emphasizing their relevance in dental and medical education. The session also covered effective strategies for evaluating communication skills, including OSCE-based assessments, standardized patients, and rubric-driven evaluations to ensure consistency and fairness.
The session wrapped up with key takeaways on improving communication skills evaluation, ensuring consistent faculty calibration, and encouraging reflective learning to strengthen professional growth.
