COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Dental Assistant program is approximately 10 months in length (Phase I & II). During this course, initially the students will receive basic instruction in skills required in any health care setting. The students will receive an understanding of the health industry and its various career
paths, both traditional and nontraditional. Competency based areas include medical law and ethics, communications, medical terminology, medical math, body system review and pathology of disease, human growth and development including life continuum. Instruction and practice will be provided in basic skills used in most health care settings, including specific skills such as the taking of vital signs, basic patient intake skills, documentation skills, computer input and retrieval skills, understanding of quality control and quality assurance, standard precautions, as well as others.The second phase II of the program includes curriculum content in biodental sciences, dental services, clinical services and clinical practice. Students receive on-the-job training in the dental offices in addition to courses taken on campus.
COURSE OUTCOMES
On completion of the Dental Assistant Course, the candidate will be competent to:
- Provide basic chair side assisting skills as well as expanded functions that are within the guidelines of the dental practice.
- Produce adequate diagnostic aids (i.e. radiographs, study models).
- Provide adequate dental laboratory skills.
- Understand and manage ethical decisions and comply with legal regulations governing the practice of dental assisting.
- Exhibit professionalism in a dental practice.
- Manage various types of patients in a variety of clinical settings.
- Demonstrate basic dental office procedures.
- Apply self-assessment principles and develop commitment to lifelong learning.
- Use and evaluate scientific information to enhance their knowledge and skills in the promotion of oral health.
- Successfully complete requirements necessary for registration or certification.
- Demonstrate adequate job seeking skills.
